Conquering the Trail

Taking your Jeep Wrangler off the beaten path is one of the most rewarding experiences in the automotive world. However, the rugged solid-axle suspension that makes the Wrangler so capable off-road also introduces unique maintenance challenges, most notably the dreaded 'Death Wobble'.

Death Wobble is a violent shaking of the front end that typically occurs after hitting a bump at highway speeds. It is not a myth, and it is almost always caused by worn or loose steering and suspension components.

Diagnosing the Front End

Before throwing parts at your Jeep, perform a dry steering test. Have a friend turn the steering wheel back and forth while you inspect the front end components. Look for any excessive play in the track bar bushings, drag link ends, and tie rod ends. The track bar is the most common culprit, as it keeps the axle centered beneath the vehicle.

Upgrading for Durability

If you have installed larger tires or a lift kit, the factory suspension geometry has been altered, placing increased stress on stock components. Upgrading to heavy-duty, adjustable track bars, forged tie rod ends, and premium ball joints is essential to maintain tight steering and prevent catastrophic failures miles away from civilization.
